Senior Platform Governance Engineer
In this role, you will design, implement, and automate solutions to evaluate the performance and resilience of our platform under varying load conditions. Your work will focus on store operations, ensuring scalability, stability, and optimization while contributing to the ongoing success of BigCommerce as a leader in high-performance ecommerce.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain store generation tools to create realistic and scalable scenarios for performance and load testing
- Design and execute load tests using tools like Artillery to identify performance bottlenecks and scalability limits, particularly in store operations
- Automate data collection and reporting processes to deliver actionable insights into platform performance and load test results, ensuring regressions are proactively prevented
- Work closely with engineering teams to understand system architecture, identify critical performance paths, and provide recommendations for improvement based on data analysis
- Drive continuous improvement of load testing methodologies, tools, and best practices within the Platform Governance team
- Thoroughly document test plans, results, and insights for future reference and collaboration
- Optimize platform bottlenecks identified during testing to improve scalability and performance
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- At least 3 years of experience in scalability and performance testing, with a strong understanding of load generation, monitoring, and analysis
- Expertise in using load testing tools, particularly Artillery
- Proficiency in two or more programming languages, including Go, Scala, and TypeScript, with flexibility to work across all three
- Experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and ELK stack for monitoring and analysis
- Proven ability to build and maintain automation for testing, data collection, and reporting
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure, and expertise in microservices architectures
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and testing
- Strong communication skills, able to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- A proactive and initiative-driven approach to problem-solving, coupled with a growth mindset and eagerness to adopt new technologies
- Interest in or experience within the ecommerce industry, with an understanding of performance demands in online retail
- Fluent English communication skills (written and spoken) at a B2 level or higher
- Previous experience in the ecommerce domain, with knowledge of store operations, catalog management, and checkout processes
- Familiarity with other performance testing tools such as JMeter or Blazemeter
- Understanding of distributed systems and event-driven architectures
