Role Description/Purpose

The British Council is seeking passionate and qualified Hourly Paid Teachers to join our Teaching Centre in Chile. With a global reputation for excellence in English pedagogy and direct teaching, our centres operate in numerous countries worldwide, and our Chile location is dedicated to delivering high-quality instruction to young learners aged 2 to 6, older children aged 7 to 17, and adults.

This role plays a vital part in advancing the British Council’s cultural relations mission through English and education. As an Hourly Paid Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective lessons, supporting learning both inside and beyond the classroom, and contributing to a global initiative aimed at developing English proficiency across age groups.

Role Accountabilities

The British Council is seeking dedicated and passionate English Language Teachers to support its global English strategy and uphold its reputation as a world authority in English Language Teaching. This role involves delivering high-quality instruction to young learners and adults in both face-to-face and online contexts, while ensuring that all core standards around customer service, health and safety, and child protection are consistently met.

As part of the Learning Centre team, you will be responsible for preparing and delivering engaging lessons that motivate children to learn and have fun, monitoring their progress, and providing regular feedback to parents. You will also ensure the overall well-being of the children in your care, maintaining a safe and inclusive environment that aligns with British Council policies on safeguarding, equality, diversity, and data protection.

In addition to teaching, you will contribute to the development and continuous improvement of courses, materials, and services, while completing administrative tasks to the required standards. You will actively participate in professional development and performance management to maintain excellence in teaching and learning, and support the British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.

This role also involves assisting with local marketing and promotional strategies, supporting customer service efforts, and helping build meaningful relationships that enhance students’ understanding of contemporary UK culture. Flexibility is key, as you may be asked to cover classes for colleagues and use technology effectively during lessons.

Essentials

Qualifications & Experience

• A teaching qualification from a Chilean or international university, ideally with a focus on primary education.
• A teaching qualification (Licenciatura en educación or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent), ideally with a focus on educación parvularia, pedagogia infantil, pre-primary or primary.
• Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification from Trinity College or equivalent Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification or a licenciatura de pedagogía de inglés.
• Experience with young children: at least 2 years’ experience working with young children in an institutional setting in at least one of the following age categories: 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 7-12 and 13-17 years.
• English teaching experience: at least 2 years’ experience teaching English as a foreign language to groups from young learners (2 – 17 years old) to adults.
• Demonstrates a proven ability of lesson preparation, time-planning, managing different technology abilities and classroom management.
• Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level.

• Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
• Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC) or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL).
• Bachelor of Education Degree Programme in Primary Education or Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
• Master of Arts (MA) TESOL or other related subjects.
• Experience teaching myClass, International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Business English, Very Young Learners and Primary.
• Experience delivering classes online.
• Proficient use of zoom and technological platforms for online teaching.
  
  

Important Information

• Location: Providencia, Santiago de Chile (onsite).
• Hourly rate: $14.783 CLP (teaching) and $5.218 CLP (planning).
• Working Hours: The post holder is expected to work delivering face-to-face and online classes from our premises in Providencia between Tuesdays and Fridays in the afternoon and evening, and Saturdays in the morning and afternoon.
• Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided.
