Exploration Geologist

Exploration Geologist

What are your qualifications? BSc GeologyWhat exactly does an exploration geologist do? The work of an exploration geologist is very varied, ranging from geological mapping in remote areas, operating drilling rigs, to data analysis in the office. Currently, I am working on an underground exploration tunnel that requires mapping and sampling during construction. Collaborating closely with tunnel construction geologists helps predict future rock conditions. A significant part of my role involves ensuring safety through daily meetings and continuous improvement of working conditions.Additional insights from Esme Qualifications and Skills Besides formal qualifications, the role requires a flexible skill set including geological mapping, logging, and interpretation. Good teamwork, adaptability to local customs, professional presentation skills, and problem-solving abilities are essential. The ability to think creatively and solve complex problems is particularly important in exploration geology.Work Environment Geologists typically work for major and junior mining companies involved in exploration, with some transitioning to consultancy roles.Career Path This was Esme's first job after university. She lives in Chile and travels to the UK approximately every 1.5 years. Work schedules are usually regular, Monday to Friday, especially when based near exploration sites.Job Satisfaction and Advice Esme enjoys the diversity of her work and the opportunity to meet local communities in remote areas. Her advice to newcomers is to be resilient, as exploration can be physically and mentally challenging, especially for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Visiting hard-to-reach places and working in challenging conditions are part of the job, but modern technology alleviates some difficulties.Future Aspirations Esme aims to move into project appraisal to gain more stability while maintaining fieldwork opportunities. She values a role that balances stability with the excitement of exploration.#J-18808-Ljbffr
