Position Overview
The position is part of the Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) Education and Public Outreach (EPO) Department, under the leadership of the JAO EPO Manager.
Role Summary
The EPO Coordinator provides operational support and coordination across initiatives within the EPO area, ensuring effective implementation of communication activities aligned with established strategic objectives.
Candidate Profile
This role seeks a creative, proactive, and highly motivated communications professional with experience in content development and coordination of communication initiatives. Previous experience in scientific, engineering, or research environments, ideally in astronomy, is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to science communication and a genuine interest in contributing to a non-profit, international scientific organization, thriving in a collaborative and dynamic work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure effective implementation of communication initiatives aligned with defined strategic objectives.
- Create and manage content for ALMA’s communication channels, including newsletters, announcements, and campaigns.
- Support media requests, ensuring timely preparation of materials.
- Draft written materials, including press releases and institutional communications.
- Support public outreach activities, including events and astronomy-related exhibitions.
- Coordinate with internal teams, collaborators, and external partners to support EPO initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in communications or public affairs roles.
- Advanced computer and web literacy required.
- Excellent writing skills with a flexible, hands-on approach.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Language Skills
- Native Spanish is desirable.
- Fluency in English (minimum B2, ideally C1 level).
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office environment in Santiago Central Office (SCO) with periodic visits to the Operations Support Facility (OSF) and occasional trips to the Array Operations Site. Physical health compatible with high altitude conditions is required.
Willingness to travel for both short and extended periods is required.
